How should a society fight trolling?

In 21st century the wars are fought with information. When Russia wants to screw its rival USA it need not search for nuclear codes. It has to just get on to Facebook [Russian Hacking and Influence in the U.S. Election]. Leaders like Obama and Modi won elections powered by social media. When North Korea or China want to send a threatening signal to their rivals, they don’t have to just show their WMD. They can extract and throw information North Korea's special cyber warfare cell behind the Sony hack is masterminding other attacks on the West

Just as the national wars happen with information, so do the societal wars. The psychopaths and lynch mobs operate online pushing people to deaths. A few famous cases:
  1. The vile online messages from internet trolls 'that led girl, 16, to hang herself'
  2. Jenna Jameson Shreds Porn Industry Women for ‘Trolling’ August Ames Before Her Suicide
  3.  Cyber bullying-linked suicides rising, study says
Not all trolling victims end up dead. Most people just stop contributing and change their behavior. This removes many perspectives we could have read and it could be an effective tool to silence information we don’t want to read. How Trolls Are Ruining the Internet. If we don’t take trolling seriously, our fundamental freedoms would be at risk.

While most mature nations have enacted cyber crime laws, the police are understaffed and ill-trained. Legal process is long, expensive and cumbersome.

What we need is a private army to fight trolling. There could be a subscription service that one can sign up to and this could fund a team of informational army. These guys could keep alerts and tab on the people they are protecting and when an attack is made can respond immediately.
The responses could range in increasing order of severity:
  1. Content deletion
  2. Reporting to the website owners/moderators
  3. Collecting data about the attacker to send warning to their places of study, work
  4. Collecting evidence to send to the police
  5. Have a lawyer send notices and file motions

Rather than an individual doing these, if we have a separate service do this there would be economies of scale and specialization. And the trolls are typically a few who attack a lot of people.
Non profit foundations and charities could either sponsor the subscriptions of certain individuals or subsdize the whole service.
Without such a service protecting individuals creating content, the freedoms that the society enjoys would be curtailed.

If you're in the online world, you've dealt with a troll. If you haven't, you will. I have to deal with it on a daily basis as I write a lot and am always under scrutiny over things. Even my free hosting business gets attacked from time to time even though we do everything in our power to not participate. Every business I've ever been apart of has had this as well.
If you want to keep your online reputation intact and create a thriving online community that is friendly and engaging, then you have to effectively have to handle trolls. Here are ten ways you can accomplish just that.
1. Establish a Policy

When dealing with trolls the first step is to establish a policy for user comments. These policies should clearly detail what kind of comments are allowed and be outlined on your website and social media accounts. If you want an examples of solid comment policies, check out what the Content Marketing Institute, Huffington Post and Mother Jones have created.
2. Ignore Them

Trolls want attention. They want to get you angry, frustrated or uncomfortable. No matter how difficult it might be, simply ignoring a troll could your best tactic because when they don’t get a response, they’ll most likely go away. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, 60% of respondents opted to ignore online harassment.

3. Make Let Light of the Situation

Rachel Wisuri states on Social Media Examiner humor is one of the best ways to handle trolls. Wisuri uses Sainsbury’s, a grocery chain in the United Kingdom as an example of using humor to battle trolls after an unsatisfied customer reported that they had purchased chicken that tasted “like it was beaten to death by Hulk Hogan.” The brand replied by using a metaphor, as well as an apology. This was effective because the brand engaged the unhappy customer in a lighthearted manner.
As Rachel states, “When you make light of a troll’s tweet, you simultaneously acknowledge and defuse the situation.”

4. Unmask Them

Tim Dowling explains this nicely in an article for The Guardian, “Trolls thrive on anonymity.” By taking away that power, you may make that troll think twice about leaving nasty comments on your website, blog, or social media account. Dowling, however, doesn’t say you have to uncover and reveal their name and address,. You may be able to “turn your rage into pity”. For example, someone who constantly criticizes your writing could have a laughable blog.

5. Don’t Provide a Platform

If you happen to host your own website, you don’t have to approve offensive comments. You can also delete these comments or ban members. Alec Biedrzycki also suggests on HubSpot that you can “disable commenting from your posts to prevent trolling altogether. ” The only problem with this is while you're preventing trolls in the first place, you’re also preventing discussions among your online community.

6. Use Moderators and Online Tools

If you have the resources you may want to consider hiring a team of moderators to monitor activity on your site, blog or forum. These monitors have the power to approve or remove inappropriate comments.
You can also use disemboweling or hell banning tools or plugins to battle trolls. Other powerful ways to handle trolls are making use of the Robot9000 tool or the SMC4 software.

7. Create a Unified Community

If you have a loyal online community you may not have to worry much about trolls since the members will monitor themselves. Furthermore, when a troll does appear, your community may take matters into their own hands and drive of the trolls themselves.
Biedrzycki does warn though “if your supporters aren’t well trained in the troll-battling arts" things can spiral out of hand quickly. So be sure to keep an eye on your troops as they lay siege to an attacking troll.”

8. Listen

Gini Dietrich shares this basic, yet helpful reminder, on Spin Sucks: Listen to what is being said about your brand. Gini states, “If the online troll is really just a customer complaining, know the difference and listen. Sometimes people just want to be heard. Hear them, try to help, and they’ll almost always thank you publicly.”

9. Fight Back With Facts

If you become the target of rumors or misinformation being spread by trolls, you may want to fight back...with facts. Rachel Wisuri used Apple as an example when the iPhone 6 was released. There were many rumors that the new phone could easily bend if it was in your pocket. “Apple chose to address the issue head-on. They admitted there was an issue and that the issue affected very few customers. In doing so, they were able to stop any further controversy.”

10. Correct Mistakes

Author and TV host Jeffrey Hayzlett recommends on Entrepreneur if a troll points out a mistake you have made, then you should look into it, make the proper corrections, and admit that you were wrong. Hayzlett states:
“Let the person who wrote the complaint know you have corrected an error and explain what you did. Most times you’ll never hear from the person again, but I can guarantee the individual will appreciate that he heard directly from a company representative and didn't have to navigate an endless phone tree.”

Trolling is something that has become a mere time killer for many people right there who do not have any work to do and hence spend their invaluable time by writing rubbish about those who have accomplished something on their own.
According to scientific researchers, it has been found that it is a general human psychology to feel pleasure by seeing others under pain. It has been found that these people undergo narcissism and hence want to dominate or criticize for what they have been unable to achieve.both the trolls and sadists feel the sadistic glee in others distress.
In a society , where we fight for freedom of nearly everything in my opinion this has exaggerated trolling. This allows trolls to think that they have their right to speech, but they do not have the complete knowledge of this endless freedom of speech which disallows anyone to maline someone on any ground.
In most of the cases it is seen that the trolls are of very stiff and difficult mindset, hence impacting strict cyber laws is itself not enough.
If it was about government then there were limited ways of doing it(like imposing laws, penalties, jail, IP blockage) but when it comes to society many things can be done as society as an entity has more power than government.
Hence in a society it is necessary to inculcate the distressing effects of trolling within children at young age as it is this age that determines what kind of person you will be.
However researches say that it is advisable to ignore trolls as one cannot revive a generous human back in a body of limited control over one's senses.

A very legal question which leads to not only personal benifit but also to the whole Society..
  • As we know that troller is someone who creates conflict on sites like Twitter, Facebook and Reddit by posting messages that are particularly controversial or inflammatory with the sole intent of provoking an emotional (read: angry) response from other users (according to google)..
  • Now this kind of situation is really disappointing for the nation as this trolling really deals with snatching the personal rights of an individual..Probably I must say its an evil thing which is diverting the society from being developed..
To fight against this kind of situations:
  1. People must be make aware that this type of illegal matter is happening in our society..And might be u can aware them using general awarwness programmes, etc..
  2. As nowadays their r toll free numbers or customer care numbers awailable for a particular social media to solve individuals FAQs..So might u can approach them and solve it.
  3. Probably u can alsi mail to the particular authority or the CEO of the particular sovcial media for this illegal activities going on..So might be tgay can help u upto some extent in the sense of blockimg or reporting them spam..
  4. The forth and the worthmaking reason is that u (as an experienced person) can share your review with the audiences and maybe solve the issue imternally without approaching the main person..which can indirectly be an honor for u as a citizen of your country.
